Post #1: My library’s newest technology

It’s a good thing I’m taking this class now because my library (Roosevelt University) has just recently started using two new types of technology–a blog and a podcast.  I’d been wondering what kinds of information librarians put on blogs, so I took a look at the one my library just started.  The librarians who write it–Jake, Martinique, and Jen–have done a great job so far of making it fun and interesting to read.  It includes info such as the latest on new databases, a blurb about banned books week, “what is Roosevelt reading?”, and a rather creative idea–”ask Ms. Information–she’ll answer your questions.”  There are still some kinks to be worked out regarding design and such–the columns look a little odd–but so far, I think they’ve got it off to a great start!  Anyone who wants to check it out can see it at http://rulibrary.typepad.com/.

Roosevelt’s Performing Arts Library also recently started recording podcasts, called the “PAL podcasts.”  It’s just a chance to get the performing arts library voice out there.  The most recent one they did was about a display created by one of the student workers on “oddities”–quirky works and composers, etc.  I’m having trouble accessing it right now, but I’ll try and send the link another time.  Definitely good stuff to check out!

I had a look at the blog, and found I liked the current simple design. It wasn’t too flashy and distracting. I liked reading the Ms. Information posts. She gives great information. I also really liked the “What is Roosevelt Reading?” posts. If I was a student there I would love to see what those in the Roosevelt community are reading.

I looked at the blog after reading your post. The blog has a simple layout, and the categories are all useful and interesting to read. The Ms. Information, Library Buzz and the Database categories were especially interesting and provided helpful information. Roosevelt University is on the right track!

I agree – well-planned blog with some snazzy categories. Nice inclusion of Digg and Delicious.

I’m glad that people are finding the blog useful! Martinique, one of the librarians who helps write it, was happy to hear that people are reading it. I agree that it’s a good example of what kind of info to include a library blog. The main thing they’re trying to do now is encourage students to read the blog. A lot of them don’t know it’s out there yet. Library staff have been putting notices up around campus and there’s now a link to it on the university’s library page, so hopefully more students will be reading it soon!
